The company continued to grow, but as big-box stores and online retail hit the scene, Toys “R” Us failed to adapt, was dragged down by debt, and filed for bankruptcy in 2017. Although Toys “R” Us in the USA couldn’t keep afloat, Toys “R” Us Canada adapted under the leadership of CEO Melanie Teed-Murch and a $300 million investment from Toronto group Fairfax Holdings. Now, Toys “R” Us, Babies “R” Us, and HMV Canada are 100% Canadian owned and operated.
